World Largest Swimming Lesson - Thursday June 21st 4.55pm 2018

posted Jun 11, 2018, 7:03 PM by Aquatic Info

This 2018 World's Largest Swimming Lesson™ will take place on Thursday, June 21st. This will be the ninth year for the global event and TEAM WLSL™ will continue with its goal of reaching more than one billion with the message Swimming Lesson Save Lives™ by 2019. Local WLSL events will take place at hundreds of locations in more than 20 countries on five continents over the course of 24 hours. TEAM WLSL™ holds the current Guinness World Record™ for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson conducted at multiple venues. The official record was set in 2014 with 36,564 participants in 22 countries. The World's Largest Swimming Lesson™ is a promotional event designed to build awareness and generate local and national press attention about the vital importance of teaching kids to swim to help prevent drowning. What's exciting about the WLSL event is that so many organizations and individual aquatic facilities are coming together to make it happen. The WLSL event helps capture the passion we have for this critical issue as individuals and focuses all that energy on one message for one day.
  • The results from the 2017 WLSL event were amazing. Last year, 41,068 kids and adults participated in WLSL events in 26 countries generating more than 300 million media impressions. Aquatic facilities, from Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Galveston, Texas to swim schools in India, to locations in Jamaica, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, the UAE and South Korea, all taught the same swimming lesson with one goal in mind — send the message Swimming Lesson Save Lives™.
The Glennie Aquatic Centre is excited to be participating on Thursday the 21st of June. It will be a fun afternoon for all, with the Thursday afternoon Learn to Swim Squad kids staying on for the FREE lesson and many other kids coming along to join in the fun for the afternoon. There will be certificates for the participants and hot dogs will be available after the lesson. Register NOW in the Aquatic Centre Office.

International Water Safety Day

posted May 14, 2018, 4:48 PM by Aquatic Info   [ updated May 14, 2018, 5:17 PM ]

Did you know that drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children? We're shining a spotlight on this day so you know the basics for keeping yourself, your family and friends safe in and around the water every day. It all begins with learning to swim! Swim lessons teach safety and swimming skills you need to enjoy the water safely. But it's not just about knowing how to swim. You need to be smart, too. Here are some ways to do that: • Swim as a pair near a lifeguard’s chair. Buddy up. Never swim alone. Only swim in places that are protected by lifeguards—or, if at a home pool, only swim when an adult is actively supervising the water. • Look before you leap. Check the water and weather conditions to be sure that it’s a safe place and time to swim. And always enter feet first unless the area is intended for diving. • Follow the rules. They exist to keep you safe. Always listen to the lifeguards. • Life jackets save lives, so don’t just pack it, wear your jacket. Everyone should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when on a boat, and anyone who needs a bit more support should wear one when going into the water. • Think, so you don't sink. Know what to do if you get in trouble in the water. The more skills you have, the better you’ll be able to deal with scary situations. • And if someone around you gets in trouble, reach or throw, don’t go! Use reaching or throwing equipment to help a struggling person get to safety. Only trained lifeguards should enter the water to help someone in trouble, and even then, the lifeguard is going in with rescue equipment. Knowing how to swim, making smart choices around the water and knowing what to do if something goes wrong can make a difference between life and death. Get started by taking the Pool Safely Pledge at poolsafely.gov/pledge. On this International Water Safety Day and throughout the rest of the year, do your part, be water smart!

Party with a Purpose

The Glennie Aquatic Centre is raising funds to send a team of swimming coaches to Vietnam as part of the Swim Vietnam Mission. Each year, hundreds of children in Vietnam drown because they can’t swim. The Mission will send qualified coaches not only to teach children to swim, but to help train adults to become swimming teachers.

To help with the fundraising, there will be a Party with a Purpose held on Saturday 12 March at St Anthony’s School, Memory Street, Toowoomba. There will be a licensed bar, music and entertainment and you can bring your own picnic food.

Dress up in your best vintage bohemian gear and join the fun of Bohopalooza. Tickets are $25. Call the Aquatic Centre on 07 4688 8845 or email townsends@glennie.qld.edu.au for more details.

Join us for Sporting Schools!

Sporting Schools will engage more than 850,000 children across Australia in what will be the country’s largest school-based participation programme.

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has partnered with 32 national sporting organisations (NSOs) to offer sporting programmes to children before, during or after school. Registration is free for all Australian primary schools, sporting organisations, and coaches.

By bringing sports, schools, and community organisations together, Sporting Schools aims to increase children’s participation in sport and to connect with local sporting clubs in their community.

The Glennie Aquatic Centre has registered with Sporting Schools and can support school sporting programmes by providing registered coaches to deliver a range of sports.

By focusing on having fun, having a go and getting active, Sporting Schools will provide children with positive sporting experiences to help foster a lifelong interest in sport. The Glennie Aquatic Centre supports this through the Playing for Life philosophy, which focuses on providing safe, fun and engaging activities that get all children involved, regardless of their level of ability.

The next Holiday Intensive block will be - September 28th to October 2nd 2015

Our holiday Intensive programs are not only popular but amazingly beneficial. The lessons are 45 minutes in length and run for 5 consecutive days. Some of the benefits of intensive swimming are as follows:

  • building confidence at a faster rate
  • providing your child the opportunity to practice skills taught during each lesson
  • assisting in the retention of what is being taught during each lesson
  • being active during the school holidays
