Minor incident
In the case of a minor incident GAC staff are required to:

1. Identify the problem eg”

  • Is someone injured?
  • Has some equipment failed?

2. Assess the situation
  • Should the pool be cleared (are there sufficient lifeguards)?
  • Is First Aid required?
  • Who should be called?

3. Report by completing one or all of the following
  • Incident Report?
  • Maintenance Request?
  • Hazard Report?
Major incident

In the case of a major incident GAC staff are required to:

1. Identify the problem eg”
  • Has there been a major injury?
  • Is there a fire?
  • Is there a chemical spill?
  • Is there a bomb threat?

2. Assess the situation
  • Should the GAC facility be evacuated
  • Who should be called

3. Report by completing one or all of the following
  • Incident Report
  • Maintenance Request
  • Hazard Report
Teamwork
The GAC Emergency Evacuation Co-ordinator is Mr Lindsay Clyde. In his absence, the GAC Supervisor on duty assumes the role of Evacuation Co-ordinator. All staff are expected to follow the directions of the Evacuation Co-ordinator.

GAC staff are encouraged to take control in emergency situations and delegate tasks to ensure that all priorities are met. In an emergency, there are decisions to make as there are several actions that need to take place immediately.
  1. Render First Aid
  2. Evacuate the building
  3. Call emergency services
Communication
GAC staff are instructed at induction and also as part of in-service training to:
  • Use PA system to notify public
  • Use voice commands in the case of a communications system failure
  • Activate the manual alarm control
  • Call the emergency services
  • Call the GAC Manager
Emergency Equipment
GAC staff are instructed at induction and also as part of in-service training to:
  • Locate emergency equipment
  • Understand its use and limitations
  • Learn the use of new equipment
First Aid
All GAC are expected to achieve the minimum requirement for First Aid – Apply First Aid as part of in-service training. Until this requirement is met the following applies:

  • Assess the situation
- Recover the person from the pool
- Commence CPR
  • Call for a First Aider (First Aid List located with First Aid kit in GAC Reception)
  • Complete an incident report
Reporting
No matter how minor and no matter if it affects a staff member, student, contractor or member of the public, all accidents, incidents, hazards and faults are reportable.
